Inclusive teaching starts with values and mindset. An inclusive instructor’s attitudes and intentions toward creating welcoming and equitable learning environments aligns with their actions. Espousing the belief that inclusive teaching is a core component of excellent instruction is a critical early step that can lead to the implementation of such practices after a commitment is made and actions are taken.

Inclusive teaching takes many forms. There is no one-size-fits-all approach for building a more inclusive environment but there are a number of practices that can lead to such outcomes. Context matters. Inclusive instructors consider who is in their class and other situational factors to choose the strategies that are the most promising.
