New Approaches to Teaching the Armenian Genocide

From the event description: "Join the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, the Ohio Council on Holocaust and Genocide Education, and Facing History and Ourselves for a FREE educator workshop led by the California-based Genocide Education Project. Participants will learn the general contours of the history of the Armenian Genocide as well as how to use objects in the classroom for a powerful pedagogical experience. The first 35 educators from Ohio schools to register and complete the workshop will receive a free copy of Karnig Panian’s Goodbye, Antoura for their school libraries. All Ohio educators will earn one contact hour for professional development after completion. Anyone may register for this event, however the workshop content will focus on the needs of educators and students in middle school and high school classrooms.

The children and grandchildren of the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Turkish government in 1915 still grapple with the continuing effects of a genocide that is denied by the Turkish government, while trying to continue to survive and preserve their culture outside of their homeland. Survivor objects, such as the few recovered ancient-illustrated bibles rescued by Armenians escaping destruction, acquire their own power to illuminate the devastation of genocide and its legacy.

This workshop is in conjunction with the Maltz Museum’s new special exhibition, Stories of Survival. Each registered educator will receive a guest pass via e-mail to see the virtual or in-person exhibition. Self-guided classroom tours or virtual tours are available from Wed. October 27, 2021- Sunday, February 27, 2022."
